Flags
Two initial flags are presented here, those of the pirate Thomas Tew (d. 1695) and one based on the flag of the probably mythical Captain Misson. Together with a de-frocked Italian priest Caraccioli they founded the utopian colony of Libertalia on the island of Madagascar.
According to Defoe (see resources), Tew flew a black flag and Misson a white one:
“Ours is a brave, a just, an innocent, and a noble Cause; the Cause of Liberty. I therefore advise a white Ensign, with Liberty painted in the Fly, and if you like the Motto, a Deo a Libertate, for God and Liberty, as an Emblem of our Uprightness and Resolution.”
The details of Tew’s flag are from David Cordingly Pirates in Fact and Fiction
